Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED)

Below are some ideas on how CPTED Principles could reduce crime in your area, however,  please keep in mind there are no single strategies that will reduce all crime.

  • Secure trash enclosures
  • Reduce foliage that may be used as hiding spots for people/property
  • Ensure adequate lighting
  • Taking informal ownership of public spaces as their own property
  • Being able to observe semi-public spaces through lighting, landscaping, and clear visibility of areas to reduce chances of crime opportunities
  • Strategies to limit access control to problem areas
  • Create a Neighborhood Watch or social groups that focus on current problems in your neighborhoods and finding solutions to address these problems
  • Creating neighborhood programs to conduct graffiti removal, litter clean ups, and area beautification
