In the community oriented policing approach to crime prevention, the Operations Division Commanders depend on crime data to help deploy appropriate teams to various beats within the city. In order to make decisions and coordinate teams to work within the community to identify problems and resolve issues in collaborative effort, The Division Commander calls upon the Crime Analyst to prepare daily, weekly and monthly crime trending reports.

The Crime Analyst currently tracks “preventable crimes” and crimes that end themselves to a series. This is also referred to as "Part I Crimes". As of September 2022 the department is currently transitioning to a new system, the "preventable crimes" are now called "Offense A".  Please refer to the Crime Statistics page for further explanation.

“Preventable crimes” are those which are thought to be preventable or deterred by a marked police unit patrolling the city.

The crimes and associated arrests tracked by the Crime Analyst are:

  • Robbery
  • Burglary (Residential)
  • Burglary (Commercial)
  • Vehicle
  • Thefts from Vehicles
  • Commercial Grand Thefts
  • Auto Theft
  • Auto Recoveries

The goal is to provide timely, accurate and informational support to line operations and investigations. The Crime Analyst maintains an accurate crime and suspect database which facilitates quality analysis on crime series, patterns, trends, and offenders which will lead to the identification, arrest and successful prosecution of criminals.

The Crime Analyst provides operational and administrative support in terms of producing staff reports, working on projects involving other city departments, and assisting in patrol deployment.
