Our City and the lives of residents are made more fun and exciting by the numerous and varied small, as well as large, businesses located here. Businesses in our entrepreneur-friendly city range from retail, restaurants, catering, lawn care, accounting, the list goes on. To residents this means they live in a city that meets their needs and wants. This relationship is a mutually benefiting one, and if you can envision your company as the next great business in Westminster, these steps will get you started on making that vision a reality.

Please be informed that these are general guidelines, so your business may have other processes to follow. Feel free to explore our City website to find answers to your questions. If there is something else we can do to assist you, please feel free to contact us.

  1. Find the perfect location in Westminster for your business.
  2. Review Westminster planning, zoning, and parking requirements. Before signing a lease, it is important to know whether your preferred location can accommodate your business. A careful review of the uses allowed and other zoning requirement is very important before purchasing or leasing a property. Review of the City records and permits will provide assurances that a business is allowed in the zone and that there are no code violations on the property. Our Community Development Department is happy to work with you to discuss any planning and building concerns and help define the various applications and entitlements that may be needed for your business type and location.
  3. Apply for a business license. The City's Municipal Code requires most businesses operating in Westminster to pay an annual business license tax. Business licenses are not transferable between owners; however, they may be transferred to new location with the proper notification and approval by the City. A business license can be issued while you wait, if all the needed documentation is provided during your visit. You will find our Business License Team, forms, and other important and helpful information for business licenses here
  4. Take advantage of business organizations. There are many organizations that are able to assist both new and existing businesses with a variety of needs, including financing, marketing, training, and a host of other opportunities evolving on a regular basis.
